Brief history
Mustang is one of the smallest Buddhist kingdoms. It is located in the northwestern part of Nepal, next to the border to Tibet. The Kingdom of Mustang has remained virtually paralyzed after loosing its spiritual and cultural patronage from Sakya, Tibet, in 1959.
Until now it has remained one of the most isolated and inaccesible areas of the world. And therefore it is one of the few places where social and spiritual life has remained unchanged for centuries.
Because of its exposure to the outside world Mustang undoubtedly needs improvements in providing water, sanitation, health and education. The childrens task, beginning in their early ages, is to help with the farmwork. They have to look after the cattle and have to collect firewood.
On the other hand this exposure also presents a challenge for the survival of Mustang's rich Tibetan Buddhist culture. These challenges have already been forseen by Mustang's spiritual patron HH Sakya Trizin, HE Chogye Trichen Rinpoche and HE Ludhing Khen Rinpoche.
